South Africa Synthetic Filament Tow Exports
Synthetic filament tow exports from South Africa shrank sharply to 2.8K tons in October 2023, dropping by -19.8% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, total exports indicated slight growth from October 2022 to October 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, exports increased by +2.8% against July 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 45% m-o-m.
In value terms, synthetic filament tow exports declined sharply to $4.2M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. In general, exports saw a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 40% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $6.3M. From April 2023 to October 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
Mozambique (709 tons), Zambia (533 tons) and Zimbabwe (127 tons) were the main destinations of synthetic filament tow exports from South Africa, with a combined 49% share of total exports. The UK and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.8%.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mozambique ($1.5M), Zambia ($909K) and Zimbabwe ($150K) were the largest markets for synthetic filament tow exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 62% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +1.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Moreover, synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning exceeded the volume of the second product type, synthetic filament tow (560 tons), fourfold.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning amounted to +2.8%.
In value terms, synthetic staple fibres, not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning ($2.7M) and synthetic filament tow ($1.4M) were the most exported types of synthetic filament tow and staple fibers, not carded or combed from South Africa worldwide.
Synthetic filament tow, with a CAGR of -0.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In October 2023, the synthetic filament tow price stood at $1,489 per ton (FOB, South Africa), leveling off at the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 17% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2,283 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($3,104 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($398 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cuba (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
