South Africa Sees Minor Decline in Television Receiver Exports, Totals $59M in 2023

South Africa Television Receiver Exports

In 2023, overseas shipments of television receivers decreased by -29.3% to 456K units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 307%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 3.6M units. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, television receiver exports contracted slightly to $59M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 85%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $225M. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Zambia (98K units), Botswana (78K units) and Namibia (48K units) were the main destinations of television receiver exports from South Africa, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Mozambique, Swaziland, Malawi, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola, Nigeria and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +56.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for television receiver exported from South Africa were Zambia ($12M), Namibia ($9.5M) and Botswana ($8.3M), together accounting for 51% of total exports. Mozambique, Cote d'Ivoire, Swaziland, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +70.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by reception apparatus for television, whether or not incorporating radio-broadcast receivers or sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus; incorporating a colour video display or screen (with a CAGR of +3.9%), while the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, reception apparatus for television, whether or not incorporating radio-broadcast receivers or sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus; incorporating a colour video display or screen ($50M) remains the largest type of television receivers exported from South Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by tuner blocks ($7M), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of reception apparatus for television, whether or not incorporating radio-broadcast receivers or sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus; incorporating a colour video display or screen exports totaled -2.4%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: tuner blocks (-18.7% per year) and reception apparatus for television, whether or not incorporating radio-broadcast receivers or sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus; incorporating a black and white or other monochrome video display or screen (-3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the television receiver price stood at $129 per unit (FOB, South Africa), growing by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 112%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $245 per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($196 per unit), while the average price for exports to Liberia ($36 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cote d'Ivoire (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
