Significant Increase in South Africa's October 2023 Import Value for Transmission Shafts Reaches $28M

South Africa Transmission Shaft Imports

In October 2023, purchases abroad of transmission shafts and cranks, bearing housings and plain shaft bearings, gears and gearing and articulated link chain was finally on the rise to reach 1.2K tons for the first time since June 2023, thus ending a three-month declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% from October 2022 to October 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when imports increased by 39% month-to-month.

In value terms, transmission shaft imports rose modestly to $28M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7% from October 2022 to October 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. Imports by Country

China (320 tons), the United States (198 tons) and Germany (166 tons) were the main suppliers of transmission shaft imports to South Africa, together comprising 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Italy, India and France, which together accounted for a further 18%.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in France (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest transmission shaft suppliers to South Africa were China ($5.2M), the United States ($5M) and Germany ($4.8M), together accounting for 54% of total imports. Japan, Italy, India and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

In terms of the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +6.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

In October 2023, gearboxes and speed changers (475 tons) constituted the largest type of transmission shaft supplied to South Africa, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, gearboxes and speed changers exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, chain; articulated link, roller, of iron or steel (195 tons), twofold. Cranks and crankshafts (190 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of gearboxes and speed changers totaled +3.7%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: chain; articulated link, roller, of iron or steel (+5.2% per month) and cranks and crankshafts (-3.8% per month).

In value terms, gearboxes and speed changers ($12M) constituted the largest type of transmission shaft supplied to South Africa, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings ($5.2M), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by cranks and crankshafts, with an 11% share.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the transmission shaft price amounted to $22,970 per ton (CIF, South Africa), declining by -7.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 an increase of 10% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $24,845 per ton in September 2023, and then reduced in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($30,611 per ton), while the price for Japan ($14,163 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
