South Africa Turkey Meat Import Price in July 2023
In July 2023, the turkey meat price amounted to $1,901 per ton (CIF, South Africa), declining by -2% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 22% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,077 per ton. From May 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($2,017 per ton), while the price for Chile ($1,448 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

South Africa Turkey Meat Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplied products. In July 2023, the product with the highest price was frozen turkey cuts ($1,903 per ton), while the price for frozen whole turkeys totaled $1,827 per ton.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by frozen turkey cut (+1.1%), while the prices for the other product experienced more modest paces of growth.
South Africa Turkey Meat Imports
Turkey meat imports into South Africa dropped remarkably to 736 tons in July 2023, falling by -35.5% against June 2023 figures. In general, imports saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 with an increase of 33% month-to-month.
In value terms, turkey meat imports shrank significantly to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when imports increased by 27% against the previous month.
South Africa Turkey Meat Imports by Type
In July 2023, frozen turkey cuts (710 tons) was the main type of turkey meat supplied to South Africa, with a 97% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen turkey cuts exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, frozen whole turkeys (26 tons), more than tenfold.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen turkey cuts amounted to -1.4%.
In value terms, frozen turkey cuts ($1.4M) constituted the largest type of turkey meat supplied to South Africa, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by frozen whole turkeys ($47K), with a 3.3% share of total imports.

In July 2023, Brazil (557 tons) constituted the largest turkey meat supplier to South Africa, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, turkey meat imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (107 tons), fivefold.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Brazil stood at -2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (+3.0% per month) and Chile (-4.5% per month).
In value terms, Brazil ($1.1M) constituted the largest supplier of turkey meat to South Africa, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($170K), with a 12% share of total imports.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil amounted to -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (+2.8% per month) and Chile (-2.0% per month).
