Vitamin Imports in South Africa Drop by 21% to Reach $53 Million in 2023

In 2023, purchases abroad of provitamins and vitamins decreased by -16% to 5.5K tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 6.8K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vitamin imports shrank rapidly to $53M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -32.1% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $81M. Imports by Country

In 2023, China (3.6K tons) constituted the largest supplier of vitamin to South Africa, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, vitamin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (512 tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (508 tons), with a 9.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (-3.8% per year) and Germany (+2.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($25M) constituted the largest supplier of provitamins and vitamins to South Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Switzerland ($7.6M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +9.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (-3.0% per year) and Germany (-1.7% per year).

Vitamins; vitamin c and its derivatives, unmixed (2.1K tons), vitamins; vitamin e and its derivatives, unmixed (1.3K tons) and vitamins; n.e.s. in item no. 2936.2, and their derivatives, unmixed (791 tons) were the main products of vitamin imports to South Africa, together accounting for 77% of total imports. Vitamins; vitamins a and their derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; d- or DL-pantothenic acid (vitamin B3 or vitamin B5) and its derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; vitamin B2 and its derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; n.e.s. in heading no. 2936, including natural concentrates, vitamins; vitamin B1 and its derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; vitamin B6 and its derivatives, unmixed and vitamins; vitamin B12 and its derivatives, unmixed lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for vitamins; d- or DL-pantothenic acid (vitamin B3 or vitamin B5) and its derivatives, unmixed (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, provitamins and vitamins with the largest imports in South Africa were vitamins; vitamin e and its derivatives, unmixed ($12M), vitamins; n.e.s. in item no. 2936.2, and their derivatives, unmixed ($9.3M) and vitamins; vitamins a and their derivatives, unmixed ($9.1M), together accounting for 57% of total imports. Vitamins; vitamin c and its derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; d- or DL-pantothenic acid (vitamin B3 or vitamin B5) and its derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; vitamin B6 and its derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; vitamin B2 and its derivatives, unmixed, vitamins; n.e.s. in heading no. 2936, including natural concentrates, vitamins; vitamin B1 and its derivatives, unmixed and vitamins; vitamin B12 and its derivatives, unmixed lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the vitamin price amounted to $9,594 per ton (CIF, South Africa), dropping by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $15,853 per ton. From 2019 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($40,165 per ton), while the price for China ($6,980 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
