South African Watch Price Drops by 12% to $2.7 per Unit

South Africa Watch Import Price in May 2023

In May 2023, the watch price stood at $2.7 per unit (CIF, South Africa), dropping by -12.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 141% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $8.6 per unit in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to May 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to -4.1% per month.

South Africa Watch Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In May 2023, the product with the highest price was wrist-watches, pocket-watches, stop-watches and other watches; with case of precious metal or of metal clad with precious metal ($203 per unit), while the price for plastic or non-precious metal watches totaled $2.1 per unit.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of plastic or non-precious metal watches totaled +2.4%.

In value terms, plastic or non-precious metal watches ($5.9M) constituted the largest type of watch supplied to South Africa, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by wrist-watches, pocket-watches, stop-watches and other watches; with case of precious metal or of metal clad with precious metal ($1.7M), with a 23% share of total imports.
