South Africa Wine Export Price in May 2023
In May 2023, the wine price amounted to $1.8 per litre (FOB, South Africa), waning by -5.9% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 an increase of 18% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1.9 per litre in April 2023, and then contracted in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3.3 per litre), while the average price for exports to France ($586 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Wine Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In May 2023, the product with the highest price was sparkling wine ($4.4 per litre), while the average price for exports of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) stood at $1.7 per litre.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: wine of fresh grapes (+0.5%).
South Africa Wine Exports
In May 2023, approximately 31M litres of wine were exported from South Africa; flattening at April 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when exports increased by 51% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 42M litres in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to May 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wine exports reduced slightly to $54M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 59% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 65M litres in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to May 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
South Africa Wine Exports by Type
Wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (30M litres) was the largest type of wine exported from South Africa, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by sparkling wine (475K litres), with a 1.6% share of total exports.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) totaled -1.1%.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($52M) remains the largest type of wine exported from South Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by sparkling wine ($2.1M), with a 3.9% share of total exports.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) was relatively modest.
South Africa Wine Exports by Country
The UK (7.6M litres) was the main destination for wine exports from South Africa, with a 25% share of total exports. Moreover, wine exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (2.7M litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Namibia (2.4M litres), with a 7.7% share.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to the UK totaled -1.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Germany (-5.9% per month) and Namibia (+1.1% per month).
In value terms, the UK ($11M) remains the key foreign market for wine exports from South Africa, comprising 21% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($5M), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 7.3% share.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to the UK was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the United States (+5.7% per month) and Namibia (+2.2% per month).
