South Africa Woolen Yarn Exports
In December 2023, the amount of yarn of wool exported from South Africa soared to 38 tons, growing by 32% on November 2023 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 with an increase of 103% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 58 tons. From March 2023 to December 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, woolen yarn exports amounted to $1.6M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 with an increase of 158% m-o-m.

Exports by Country
Germany (14 tons) was the main destination for woolen yarn exports from South Africa, accounting for a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, woolen yarn exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Syrian Arab Republic (3.9 tons), threefold.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to -1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (-1.1% per month) and Swaziland (+14.3% per month).
In value terms, Germany ($515K) remains the key foreign market for woolen yarn exports from South Africa, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Syrian Arab Republic ($165K), with an 11% share of total exports.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Germany was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (-1.1% per month) and Swaziland (+15.2% per month).
Exports by Type
Yarn of fine animal hair (carded or combed), not put up for retail sale (25 tons) was the largest type of woolen yarn exported from South Africa, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, yarn of fine animal hair (carded or combed), not put up for retail sale exceeded the volume of the second product type, yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale (8.7 tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale (3.3 tons), with an 8.8% share.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of yarn of fine animal hair (carded or combed), not put up for retail sale stood at -3.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale (+0.1% per month) and yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale (+5.7% per month).
In value terms, yarn of fine animal hair (carded or combed), not put up for retail sale ($1.1M) remains the largest type of woolen yarn exported from South Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale ($298K), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale, with a 7.8% share.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of yarn of fine animal hair (carded or combed), not put up for retail sale amounted to -3.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale (+0.3% per month) and yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale (+8.2% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In December 2023, the woolen yarn price stood at $41,135 per ton (FOB, South Africa), with a decrease of -21.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2023 an increase of 67% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $52,339 per ton in November 2023, and then contracted remarkably in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($112K per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($8,003 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
