South Korea's $800 Billion Pension Fund to Divest from Coal Holdings

South Korea's National Pension Service (NPS), the world's third-largest pension fund, is set to divest from several overseas coal producers under stricter climate policies aimed at adherence to global sustainability trends. As reported by Bloomberg, this decision follows South Korea's pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century. The NPS will cease investments in companies deriving over 50% of their revenue from coal-related activities, with immediate effect for foreign entities and by 2030 for domestic ones.

According to IndexBox data, South Korea's coal imports far surpass exports. In 2023, the import value reached a substantial $21.3 billion, reflecting the country's heavy reliance on coal for energy. Key import partners include Australia, providing $9.5 billion worth of coal, followed by Russia at $4.3 billion, Indonesia at $2.7 billion, Canada at $2 billion, and South Africa at $1 billion. Conversely, South Korea's coal exports were notably lower, totaling $241.8 thousand, with the largest recipients being the Philippines and Malaysia, receiving $154.1 thousand and $83.6 thousand respectively.

The new NPS policy mandates the selling of shares in approximately 28 foreign companies beginning next year. This includes holdings in entities such as Coal India Ltd. and Whitehaven Coal Ltd., as documented at the end of 2023. Despite withdrawing from these investments, the NPS has allocated nearly 5% of its 399 trillion won global equity portfolio to the energy sector, equating to around $791 billion managed in total assets.

While the NPS claims that domestic investments in coal-dependent firms will remain viable if credible energy transition plans are demonstrated, critics argue that the policy lacks the immediacy seen in global counterparts. This strategic pivot reflects the dual pressures of maintaining economic interests while navigating the global shift toward greener energy sources.
