Spain Caramel Imports
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of caramel decreased by -12.8% to 31K tons in 2023. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Imports peaked at 36K tons in 2022, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, caramel imports stood at $59M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +90.9% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country
In 2023, France (11K tons) constituted the largest supplier of caramel to Spain, accounting for a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, caramel imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (5.1K tons), twofold. Germany (4.3K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from France was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-3.5% per year) and Germany (+28.1% per year).
In value terms, France ($20M) constituted the largest supplier of caramel to Spain, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($9.4M), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 15% share.

In 2023, the caramel price amounted to $1,882 per ton (CIF, Spain), growing by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($3,509 per ton), while the price for Germany ($1,187 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
