Spain Dairy Produce Imports
In July 2023, approximately 74K tons of dairy produce were imported into Spain; shrinking by -1.6% compared with June 2023 figures. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7% over the period from July 2022 to July 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 18% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 84K tons. From April 2023 to July 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dairy produce imports expanded slightly to $258M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the period from July 2022 to July 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 16% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $275M. From April 2023 to July 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
France (17K tons), the Netherlands (13K tons) and Germany (13K tons) were the main suppliers of dairy produce imports to Spain, with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Portugal, Italy, Belgium and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 30%.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +3.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest dairy produce suppliers to Spain were the Netherlands ($54M), Germany ($52M) and France ($50M), together accounting for 60% of total imports. Italy, Portugal, Belgium and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +6.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In July 2023, cheese (32K tons) constituted the largest type of dairy produce supplied to Spain, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, yoghurt and fermented milk (15K tons), twofold. Whole fresh milk (9.1K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of cheese amounted to +1.7%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yoghurt and fermented milk (+1.2% per month) and whole fresh milk (+6.8% per month).
In value terms, cheese ($169M) constituted the largest type of dairy produce supplied to Spain, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by yoghurt and fermented milk ($30M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by powdered milk, with a 9% share.
Import Prices by Country
In July 2023, the dairy produce price stood at $3,490 per ton (CIF, Spain), growing by 4.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,590 per ton. From January 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($7,378 per ton), while the price for Portugal ($1,499 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
