Spain's Fruit Export Surges Dramatically, Reaching $8 Billion in 2023

In 2023, fruit exports from Spain contracted to 5.8M tons, which is down by -7.2% against the previous year. In general, exports showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 9.4%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 7.4M tons. From 2020 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fruit exports expanded markedly to $8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $8.4B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.Spain Fruit Exports By Country (Million USD)

Exports by Country

Germany (1.6M tons), France (1.1M tons) and the UK (448K tons) were the main destinations of fruit exports from Spain, together accounting for 55% of total exports. Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for fruit exported from Spain were Germany ($2.3B), France ($1.6B) and the UK ($647M), with a combined 57% share of total exports. Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +3.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Oranges (1.3M tons), tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas (1.1M tons) and watermelons (680K tons) were the main products of fruit exports from Spain, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Peaches and nectarines, lemons and limes, melons, persimmons, avocados, bananas and plantains, grapes, pears and quinces, apples, plums and sloes, apricots, grapefruits, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, pineapples, kiwi fruits, figs, papayas, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified and dates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by papayas (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas ($1.6B), oranges ($1.3B) and peaches and nectarines ($1B) constituted the most exported types of fruits from Spain worldwide, with a combined 50% share of total exports. Lemons and limes, watermelons, avocados, grapes, melons, persimmons, apricots, plums and sloes, pears and quinces, bananas and plantains, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, apples, grapefruits, kiwi fruits, pineapples, figs, papayas, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified and dates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 50%.

Papayas, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the fruit price stood at $1,383 per ton (FOB, Spain), growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($1,682 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($1,057 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
