Spain Fruit Exports
In October 2023, after three months of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of fruits, when their volume increased by 0.2% to 360K tons. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 with an increase of 67% month-to-month.
In value terms, fruit exports rose markedly to $583M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a mild expansion from October 2022 to October 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, exports decreased by -33.3% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 when exports increased by 57% m-o-m.

Exports by Country
Germany (90K tons), France (69K tons) and Portugal (33K tons) were the main destinations of fruit exports from Spain, with a combined 53% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 18%.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +1.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for fruit exported from Spain were Germany ($154M), France ($115M) and Portugal ($42M), with a combined 53% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, the Netherlands, Poland and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 18%.
Among the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +2.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas (90K tons), lemons and limes (50K tons) and persimmons (39K tons) were the main products of fruit exports from Spain, together accounting for 52% of total exports. These products were followed by peaches and nectarines, oranges, pears and quinces, apples, plums and sloes, bananas and plantains, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, avocados, melons, watermelons, grapes, grapefruits, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, pineapples, kiwi fruits, figs, papayas, apricots, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified and dates, which together accounted for a further 48%.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by persimmon (with a CAGR of +5.4%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the most traded types of fruits in Spain were tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas ($144M), lemons and limes ($79M) and persimmons ($61M), together accounting for 53% of total exports. These products were followed by peaches and nectarines, oranges, avocados, pears and quinces, plums and sloes, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, apples, grapes, bananas and plantains, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, kiwi fruits, melons, grapefruits, figs, pineapples, watermelons, papayas, apricots, dates and citrus fruits not elsewhere classified, which together accounted for a further 47%.
Persimmon, with a CAGR of +6.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In October 2023, the fruit price stood at $1,620 per ton (FOB, Spain), growing by 12% against the previous month. Over the period from October 2022 to October 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,951 per ton), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($751 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
