Spain's Import of Hop Drops Sharply to $6.6 Million in 2024

In 2024, imports of hops into Spain contracted markedly to 400 tons, which is down by -39.9% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 687 tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hop imports shrank dramatically to $6.6M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2024, Germany (327 tons) constituted the largest supplier of hop to Spain, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, hop imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (47 tons), sevenfold. the Netherlands (6.2 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.5% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+38.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+91.7% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($4.7M) constituted the largest supplier of hops to Spain, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($1.3M), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 3.3% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+39.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+105.9% per year).

Imports by Type

In 2024, hop cones; ground, powdered or in the form of pellets; lupulin (398 tons) was the main type of hops supplied to Spain, accounting for a 100% share of total imports. It was followed by hop cones; neither ground nor powdered nor in the form of pellets (1.7 tons), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of the volume of hop cones; ground, powdered or in the form of pellets; lupulin imports was relatively modest.

Import Prices by Country

In 2024, the hop price amounted to $16,515 per ton (CIF, Spain), surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2014 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, hop import price increased by +18.8% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 42%. The import price peaked at $16,701 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($34,993 per ton), while the price for Poland ($7,679 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
