Spain Sugar Crop Exports
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of sugar crops decreased by -28.4% to 17K tons in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated moderate growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 23K tons in 2022, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, sugar crop exports shrank remarkably to $8.1M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 50%. The exports peaked at $11M in 2022, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country
Italy (7.2K tons) was the main destination for sugar crop exports from Spain, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, sugar crop exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (2.2K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (1.6K tons), with a 9.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy totaled +9.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+2.6% per year) and Belgium (+3.3% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($4M) remains the key foreign market for sugar crops exports from Spain, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($788K), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy amounted to +14.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+1.3% per year) and Germany (-4.4% per year).
Exports by Type
Carob (16K tons) was the largest type of sugar crops exported from Spain, with a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, carob exceeded the volume of the second product type, sugar beet (1.3K tons), more than tenfold. Sugar cane (45 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of carob exports totaled +3.6%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: sugar beet (+26.2% per year) and sugar cane (+21.7% per year).
In value terms, carob ($7.6M) remains the largest type of sugar crops exported from Spain, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sugar beet ($417K), with a 5.1% share of total exports. It was followed by sugar cane, with a 0.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of carob exports stood at +5.9%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: sugar beet (-4.4% per year) and sugar cane (+9.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the sugar crop price amounted to $484 per ton (FOB, Spain), picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2023 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($558 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($344 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
