Spain Synthetic Yarn Imports
In September 2023, supplies from abroad of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers was finally on the rise to reach 1.8K tons after three months of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable contraction.
In value terms, synthetic yarn imports soared to $9.6M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced descent.

Imports by Country
Indonesia (350 tons), Turkey (279 tons) and Vietnam (239 tons) were the main suppliers of synthetic yarn imports to Spain, with a combined 48% share of total imports.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Turkey ($2.5M) constituted the largest supplier of synthetic yarn to Spain, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($1.1M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 6.8% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey stood at -8.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (-6.2% per month) and Indonesia (-1.7% per month).
Imports by Type
In September 2023, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (1.4K tons) constituted the largest type of synthetic yarn supplied to Spain, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (229 tons), sixfold.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale amounted to -4.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (-1.8% per month) and yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (+0.3% per month).
In value terms, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($6.8M) constituted the largest type of synthetic yarn supplied to Spain, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($1.7M), with a 17% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In September 2023, the synthetic yarn price amounted to $5,332 per ton (CIF, Spain), with an increase of 4.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 12% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $6,606 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($10,272 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($1,888 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
