Spain Vegetable and Melon Exports
In 2023, the amount of vegetables and melons exported from Spain contracted modestly to 6.2M tons, reducing by -2.9% compared with the year before. Overall, exports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 8.2%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 13M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, vegetable and melon exports rose rapidly to $9.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The exports peaked at $13.9B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
Germany (1.7M tons), France (956K tons) and the UK (847K tons) were the main destinations of vegetable and melon exports from Spain, with a combined 58% share of total exports. the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($2.9B) remains the key foreign market for vegetables and melons exports from Spain, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($1.4B), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 14% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+4.0% per year) and France (+1.7% per year).

Lettuce and chicory (785K tons), chilies and peppers (green) (748K tons) and watermelons (680K tons) were the main products of vegetable and melon exports from Spain, together accounting for 36% of total exports. Cucumbers and gherkins, fresh vegetables, nes, tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower and broccoli, melons, onion and shallot, eggplants (aubergines), garlic, carrots and turnips, cabbage and other brassicas, spinach, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, asparagus, green beans, mushrooms and truffles and peas (green) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 64%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for garlic (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, chilies and peppers (green) ($1.8B), tomatoes ($1.3B) and lettuce and chicory ($1.1B) appeared to be the most exported types of vegetables and melons from Spain worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. Cucumbers and gherkins, fresh vegetables, nes, cauliflower and broccoli, watermelons, garlic, melons, onion and shallot, eggplants (aubergines), potatoes, carrots and turnips, cabbage and other brassicas, asparagus, spinach, green beans, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, mushrooms and truffles and peas (green) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 56%.
Garlic, with a CAGR of +8.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the vegetable and melon price amounted to $1,549 per ton (FOB, Spain), increasing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($2,205 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($856 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
