Spain Vegetable and Melon Exports
For the fifth month in a row, Spain recorded decline in shipments abroad of vegetables and melons, which decreased by -12.2% to 261K tons in October 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when exports increased by 54% month-to-month.
In value terms, vegetable and melon exports expanded slightly to $357M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when exports increased by 54% month-to-month.

Exports by Country
Germany (71K tons), Portugal (42K tons) and France (30K tons) were the main destinations of vegetable and melon exports from Spain, together accounting for 55% of total exports.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +0.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Germany ($104M) remains the key foreign market for vegetable and melon exports from Spain, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($49M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to -2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the UK (-2.5% per month) and France (-3.8% per month).
Exports by Type
Cucumbers and gherkins (68K tons), lettuce and chicory (47K tons) and potatoes (38K tons) were the main products of vegetable and melon exports from Spain, with a combined 59% share of total exports. Onion and shallot, tomatoes, eggplants (aubergines), garlic, cauliflower and broccoli, melons, watermelons, carrots and turnips, spinach, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, cabbage and other brassicas, green beans, mushrooms and truffles, asparagus and peas (green) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by potato (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the most traded types of vegetables and melons in Spain were cucumbers and gherkins ($86M), lettuce and chicory ($71M) and tomatoes ($56M), together comprising 60% of total exports. Garlic, onion and shallot, cauliflower and broccoli, eggplants (aubergines), potatoes, melons, spinach, carrots and turnips, watermelons, asparagus, green beans, cabbage and other brassicas, mushrooms and truffles, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables and peas (green) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
In terms of the main product categories, asparagus, with a CAGR of +5.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In October 2023, the vegetable and melon price amounted to $1,368 per ton (FOB, Spain), jumping by 16% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 27% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,054 per ton. From March 2023 to October 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($1,647 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($632 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
