Spain's Inflation Climbs to 2.8% in December Amid Rising Costs

Spain experienced a rise in its year-on-year inflation rate, hitting 2.8% in December 2024, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). This increase is attributed mainly to surging transport prices and an uptick in the cost of cultural and recreational activities. For more detailed analysis, read here.

Data from IndexBox indicates that December's inflation marked the highest level since July of the previous year, showing a continuous growth trajectory for the third month in a row. This upsurge aligns with analyst expectations, emphasizing underlying base effects contributing to the inflationary trend.

The transport sector, which flipped from a decline of 0.1% in November to a 0.6% growth in December, played a pivotal role in the inflationary push. Meanwhile, cultural and recreational prices soared from 2% to 3.2% over the same period, fueled predominantly by increased costs of tourist packages.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, also reached a four-month high of 2.6% in December, up from November's 2.4%. This is in line with market forecasts, suggesting a steady underlying price pressure being felt across various sectors.

The monthly inflation rate saw an uptick to 0.5% in December compared to 0.2% in November, exceeding analyst projections of a 0.4% rise. Looking ahead, the European Commission anticipates that Spain's inflation will average around 2.2% in 2025, eventually aligning with the European Central Bank's goal of 2% by 2026.

Despite current inflationary pressures, the outlook for Spain's economy remains positive. Spanish financial services company CaixaBank forecasts robust economic performance powered by burgeoning private domestic demand. However, caution remains regarding potential geopolitical risks, such as trade tensions and conflicts, which could impact energy prices and, consequently, economic growth.
