Spain's Inflation Surges, Fueling Interest Rate Speculations

Spanish inflation accelerated more than anticipated this month, registering above the 2% mark for the second consecutive month. Bloomberg reports that this trend supports the argument for gradual interest-rate cuts, a stance echoed by leading economists.

According to data from the national statistics agency, consumer prices in December rose by 2.8% compared to the same period last year. This uptick surpassed the 2.4% increase observed in November and outpaced the 2.6% median forecast by economists participating in a Bloomberg survey. The core inflation measure, which excludes energy and some food prices, increased to 2.6%.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has been attentive to these shifts, with President Christine Lagarde noting the decreasing long-term threat of inflation spikes across the euro area. This has allowed the ECB to implement four quarter-point cuts in borrowing costs this year, with expectations for a similar pattern to continue into 2025, potentially lowering the deposit rate to 2%. These monetary policy adjustments take a "gradual" approach, which many policymakers endorse.

Key drivers of December's inflation in Spain included a significant drop in fuel prices, as well as influences from leisure and culture sectors, according to the statistics office. Despite rolling back some consumer protection measures, like VAT reductions on electricity, Spain has maintained economic growth, recording the strongest performance among the region's leading economies.

The robust job market, with unemployment nearing its lowest in over 15 years, contributed to wage growth and sustained high service prices, posing a challenge for the ECB. Spain's inflation figures are among the few major euro-area statistics available this week, with delayed data releases from Germany, France, Italy, and the broader region due to public holidays.
