Spanish Retail Sales Experience Sluggish Growth in November 2024

According to a recent report, Spain's year-on-year retail sales saw a modest increase of 1% in November, a slowdown from October's 3.4% rise and below the expected 2.8% growth rate. This data marks the slowest growth in retail trade since June 2024, primarily due to a decline in food spending, which fell to 1.5% in November from 2.2% in October, and a drop in non-food product spending, which decreased to 1.2% last month from 5.9% previously.

Month-on-month retail sales in Spain also saw a reduction, dropping by 0.6% in November, a decrease from the stagnation observed in October. Despite these recent figures, the first 11 months of the year have seen a 1.5% increase in Spanish retail trade compared to the same period last year. Notably, during the third quarter, Spain experienced a significant uptick in consumer goods spending, with a 4.5% increase compared to Q3 2023, according to data from NIQ's quarterly Retail Spending Barometer. The spending on durable and technological goods also rose by 4.2% in Q3 2024, indicating a healthy consumer interest in these segments.

Experts attribute the third-quarter growth to several favorable economic conditions. Antonio de Santos, Retail Vertical Director of NIQ in Spain, highlighted that the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) market maintained a trend of price moderation, driving an increase in demand. He noted, "Nearly all sections of packaged and fresh products have shown positive growth in volume thus far this year." Fernando Gomez, the Retail Head of GfK in Spain, echoed these sentiments, noting that sectors like technology and durables have witnessed contrary growth to analysts' expectations, fueled by consumers' interest in spending on equipment, health, leisure, and cultural products.

Despite these positive trends, challenges remain. While falling product prices benefit consumers, they also induce anxiety among retailers due to rising competition from Asian brands that offer a broader range of products at lower prices. Furthermore, the growing preference for online shopping poses a threat to physical retailers, underscoring a need for strategic adaptation in a shifting retail landscape.
