In Apr 2022, the average import spice price per ton amounted to $4,490, rising by 8.6% against the previous month. Over the last three - month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In Apr 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Indonesia ($6,481 per ton) and India ($5,499 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($4,359 per ton) and Vietnam ($4,934 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+20.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Spice Imports

In Apr 2022, approx. 45K tons of spices were imported into the United States; shrinking by -3.1% compared with the previous month. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 25% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 47K tons, and then reduced slightly in the following month.

In value terms, spice imports stood at $204M (IndexBox estimates) in Apr 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.6% from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in Mar 2022 with an increase of 24% against the previous month. Imports peaked in Apr 2022 and are expected to retain growth in months to come.

U.S. Spice Imports by Country

In Apr 2022, Vietnam (6.8K tons) constituted the largest spice supplier to the United States, with a 15% share of total imports. Moreover, spice imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (837 tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by India (481 tons), with a 1.1% share.

From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Vietnam stood at +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (-18.3% per month) and India (-53.1% per month).

In value terms, Vietnam ($33M) constituted the largest supplier of spice to the United States, comprising 16% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Brazil ($3.6M), with a 1.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 1.4% share.

From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Vietnam amounted to +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (-1.3% per month) and Indonesia (-40.9% per month).
