Starbucks Union Launches Five-Day Strike in Major Cities

The union representing Starbucks Corp. baristas has announced a five-day strike set to begin this Friday, following an unsuccessful final-stage bargaining session that ended in deadlock. Bloomberg reports that Starbucks Workers United intends to protest at unionized Starbucks stores in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle. The strike stems from dissatisfaction with the company's latest offer, which reportedly did not include immediate pay increases for unionized baristas.

Starbucks Workers United, which represents employees at over 500 of Starbucks' 10,000 company-operated locations in the US, has been part of an ongoing struggle with the coffee giant since December 2021, when the first store was organized. Workers have been campaigning for improved wages, work schedules, and hours.

This strike marks the first of its kind since February when Starbucks and the union had agreed to resume discussions. The labor dispute has seen several prominent strikes in the past, including last year's well-attended action on Red Cup Day. The union expects this round of protests to extend to numerous outlets by Christmas Eve.

In response, a Starbucks spokesperson claimed the union prematurely adjourned the bargaining session this week. The company expressed willingness to continue negotiations, stating, "We need the union to return to the table." Starbucks also highlighted that of the more than 30 issues discussed, the parties had made "meaningful agreements" on various important points, including economic demands. Moreover, Starbucks emphasized its commitment to enhancing the worker experience, noting that baristas working 20 hours a week or more receive average pay and benefits valued at $30 an hour.
