Strong Recovery in Turkish Steel Industry Despite Global Challenges in 2024

In 2024, Turkey's steel industry made a significant recovery, with steel production increasing by 9.4% compared to 2023, reaching a total of 36.89 million tons. This is evidenced by data from the Global Steel Association WorldSteel. For more details, visit the external source here.

Pig iron production also saw a substantial rise, with a 17.2% year-over-year increase, amounting to 10.19 million tons. On a monthly basis, the average steel production reached 3.07 million tons, up from 2.81 million tons in 2023, while pig iron production averaged 848.8 thousand tons per month, compared to 724.2 thousand tons the previous year.

Despite this positive trend, Turkish steel producers continue to face global challenges, including volatile demand and competition from Asian markets. In December 2024, the country's steel production decreased by 1.1% month-on-month and 7.6% year-on-year, marking it the lowest since April 2024. This was primarily due to seasonal declines in construction activity and the slowdown in China's economy, impacting global demand.

With public investments and the integration of green technologies, Turkey's steel industry is expected to continue its growth into 2025. However, risks remain, including potential declines in commodity prices and geopolitical instability. WorldSteel has revised its short-term forecast, predicting a modest 0.9% decrease in global steel demand and a 5.5% decline specifically for Turkey in 2024, but anticipates a slower decline rate of 1.7% in 2025.
