World Consumption of Sulphur (Sublimed Or Precipitated) And Colloidal Sulphur

After two years of growth, consumption of sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur decreased by -2.1% to 23M tons in 2024. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global consumption attained the maximum volume at 26M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The global sulphur market value shrank to $15.9B in 2024, standing approx. at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. Global consumption peaked at $16.5B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Consumption By Country

China (5.5M tons) remains the largest sulphur consuming country worldwide, accounting for 24% of total volume. Moreover, sulphur consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (2.3M tons), twofold. The United States (2.2M tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 9.8% share.

In China, sulphur consumption expanded at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: India (+1.9% per year) and the United States (+1.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest sulphur markets worldwide were India ($3.6B), China ($2.6B) and Japan ($1.8B), together accounting for 51% of the global market. France, Brazil, the United States, Russia, Canada, Turkey and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Among the main consuming countries, Canada, with a CAGR of +7.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of sulphur per capita consumption in 2024 were Canada (15 kg per person), Germany (10 kg per person) and France (7.3 kg per person).

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the leading consuming countries, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +6.3%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Production

In 2024, approx. 26M tons of sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur were produced worldwide; increasing by 8% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when the production volume increased by 11%. Global production peaked at 27M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphur production expanded to $16.7B in 2024 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the production volume increased by 11%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $17.2B. From 2023 to 2024, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2024 were China (5.5M tons), Saudi Arabia (3.5M tons) and the United States (2.4M tons), together accounting for 44% of global production.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +27.7%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Sulphur (Sublimed Or Precipitated) And Colloidal Sulphur

Global sulphur imports skyrocketed to 773K tons in 2024, picking up by 178% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 261% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.2M tons. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sulphur imports skyrocketed to $233M in 2024. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by 122% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $287M. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports By Country

In 2024, Morocco (453K tons) represented the main importer of sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur, creating 59% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (115K tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Zambia (44K tons). All these countries together held near 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Indonesia (33K tons), the Czech Republic (24K tons), Thailand (22K tons) and Austria (12K tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur imports, with a CAGR of +108.4% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.6%), Thailand (+11.7%) and Zambia (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.4%), Austria (-6.0%) and Indonesia (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+59 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+11 p.p.) and Thailand (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2013-2024, the share of Austria (-2.1 p.p.) and Indonesia (-27.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($91M) constitutes the largest market for imported sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur worldwide, comprising 39% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($23M), with a 9.9% share of global imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 5.7% share.

In Morocco, sulphur imports increased at an average annual rate of +103.7% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-9.1% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+16.0% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average sulphur import price stood at $302 per ton in 2024, falling by -48.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 when the average import price increased by 150%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $587 per ton, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($529 per ton), while Austria ($90 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+2.0%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Sulphur (Sublimed Or Precipitated) And Colloidal Sulphur

Global sulphur exports surged to 4.1M tons in 2024, rising by 250% against 2023 figures. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sulphur exports reduced slightly to $556M in 2024. Over the period under review, exports posted mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 156%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $706M. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports By Country

Saudi Arabia prevails in exports structure, amounting to 3.3M tons, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2024. It was distantly followed by Canada (242K tons), constituting a 5.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Iran (182K tons) and the United States (169K tons) - each reached an 8.6% share of total exports.

Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur exports, with a CAGR of +53.4% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, the United States (+21.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Iran (-2.5%) and Canada (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+81 p.p.) and the United States (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Iran and Canada saw its share reduced by -10.2% and -37% from 2013 to 2024, respectively.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($320M) remains the largest sulphur supplier worldwide, comprising 58% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($102M), with an 18% share of global exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 9.8% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value in Saudi Arabia totaled +41.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-2.0% per year) and Iran (-7.7% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2024, the average sulphur export price amounted to $136 per ton, which is down by -72.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 when the average export price increased by 172% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $493 per ton, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($424 per ton), while the United States ($14 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+8.0%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
