Sweden's Pension Fund AP2 Writes Down Stake in Northvolt

Sweden's state-owned pension fund, AP2, has made the difficult decision to write down the entire value of its investment in the bankrupt battery maker, Northvolt AB. According to an external source, this decision was revealed in the fund's annual report, marking a significant hit to its sustainable infrastructure investments.

AP2 initially invested in Northvolt in 2021, with the stake valued at 1.5 billion kronor ($137 million) at the start of 2024. This represented 17% of the fund's investments in sustainable infrastructure. However, Northvolt's recent struggles, culminating in its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States this past November, have left its financial future uncertain. The battery manufacturer faces $5.8 billion in debt and has not yet secured the necessary investor commitments to navigate its legal proceedings.

Joining forces with three other state-owned pension funds through 4 to 1 Investments AB, AP2's combined investments in Northvolt totaled 5.8 billion kronor in shares and convertible debt. This figure represents nearly 0.3% of the pension funds' total assets under management. Despite the financial setbacks, 4 to 1 Investments remains committed to engaging constructively with Northvolt, as stated by Helena Olin, head of real assets. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a European ecosystem for electrification and fossil-free transportation.
