Tanzania Signs $2.15 Billion Railway Deal with Chinese Companies

Tanzania has entered into a significant infrastructure agreement, worth $2.15 billion, with two Chinese companies to construct a pivotal railway line. According to sources, the railway will connect the main port of Dar es Salaam to a nickel mine situated in neighboring Burundi.

The contracts for the ambitious project were awarded by the Tanzania Railways Corporation to China Railway Engineering Group Ltd. and China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting Group Co. in a ceremony held in Dar es Salaam. "The signing of this contract is the coming into fruition of a bilateral agreement between the governments of Tanzania and Burundi," remarked Tanzania's Transport Minister Makame Mbarawa during the announcement.

The newly planned 282-kilometer (175-mile) Uvinza-Musongati standard gauge railway line aims not only to facilitate the export of nickel, a critical mineral, but also to enhance cross-border trade between the two East African countries. The African Development Bank, according to Tanzania's Finance Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, will finance the railway's construction through a concessional loan, marking it as a landmark investment by the AfDB in Tanzanian railway projects.
