Tentative IPO Rebound Threatened by DeepSeek's Market Impact

This week, the US tech sector faced significant turmoil following the introduction of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI model that has rattled investor confidence. According to Bloomberg, the Nasdaq 100 Index shed nearly $1 trillion, intensifying skepticism around venture-backed initial public offerings (IPOs). PitchBook has reported that IPO activity for venture-backed firms has reached its lowest ebb since 2011, a trend exacerbated by the volatile market conditions.

Data from PitchBook indicates a somber forecast for IPOs in early 2025, predicting only 21 IPOs in the first half of the year. Many private companies remain poised for public listing but are hindered by an "unfriendly exit environment," as pointed out by Kyle Stanford, lead VC analyst at PitchBook. He notes that VC-backed companies, especially those in sectors like software-as-a-service, artificial intelligence, and fintech—which have been heavily affected by the DeepSeek-driven downturn—are facing severe challenges.

Stanford emphasizes, "There's a limited amount of capital available for IPOs, and VC-backed companies will have to fight extra battles and may have to lower expectations on their valuations." This financial climate has created additional pressure on potential IPO giants like Institutional Capital Network, valued at $6 billion, and Cohesity at $4.8 billion.

Investor sentiment has also been mixed regarding recent IPO performances. While Reddit, a notable tech unicorn, achieved a 200% rise post-IPO in 2024, others such as Ibotta have not fared as well. According to the PitchBook report, the lackluster performance of these IPOs has not been sufficient to entice more startups to move towards public offerings.

However, there may be a glimmer of hope later in the year. PitchBook anticipates a moderate increase in IPO activity in the second half of 2025, with projections of 30 to 40 completed public offerings. Whether this potential upswing reaches fruition remains closely tied to market conditions and the resolution of current liquidity challenges.
