Thai SEC to Launch New Distributed Ledger Technology-Based Trading Platform

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand (SEC) is gearing up to introduce an innovative trading platform utilizing distributed ledger technology (DLT) to facilitate digital token trading by securities firms. According to a report, this strategic move is designed to boost the efficiency of Thailand's capital market by fostering a comprehensive electronic securities ecosystem.

Jomkwan Kongsakul, the deputy secretary-general of the Thai SEC, highlighted the rising demand for token investments. To address this, the SEC plans to implement new regulations to ease the issuance of electronic securities, including the digital sale of debentures—debt instruments pivotal for major corporations' fundraising efforts.

The proposed system envisions a fully digitized bond trading process, covering both primary and secondary markets. It will incorporate various trading functions such as settlement, investor registration, and payments, alongside supporting multiple blockchain chains through interoperability standards.

In an ambitious step towards digital transformation, the SEC has already sanctioned four digital token projects for this platform. Two more projects, focusing on green tokens and investment-centric initiatives, are currently under review.

Although the Bank of Thailand currently restricts cryptocurrency usage for transactional purposes, there are plans to roll out a Bitcoin payment sandbox in Phuket later this year. This pilot program aims to give overseas tourists a crypto payment alternative while enabling regulators to assess potential risks within a controlled setting.

Moreover, earlier reports indicated Thailand's potential interest in launching a stablecoin backed by government bonds, although such plans remain unofficial at this stage. In January, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra endorsed trading stablecoins and tangible asset-backed tokens, indicating a growing acceptance of digital tokens in the country's financial landscape.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, Thailand's financial sector is expected to adapt swiftly to these digital advancements, potentially leading to a significant increase in crypto-related investments and transactions as the new regulations take effect.
