Thai Aluminum Price Declines Slightly to $2,513/ton, Ending Four Months of Contraction

Thailand Aluminum Import Price in July 2023

In July 2023, the aluminum price stood at $2,513 per ton, therefore (CIF, Thailand), remained relatively stable against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 5.5% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $2,925 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Qatar ($2,555 per ton) and Malaysia ($2,553 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($2,416 per ton) and India ($2,416 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Thailand Aluminum Import Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplied products. In July 2023, the product with the highest price was unwrought aluminium alloys ($2,581 per ton), while the price for aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) totaled $2,450 per ton.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by unwrought aluminium alloys (-1.2%).

Thailand Aluminum Imports

In July 2023, supplies from abroad of aluminum increased by 4% to 51K tons, rising for the third month in a row after three months of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 with an increase of 37% month-to-month.

In value terms, aluminum imports expanded to $128M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 with an increase of 35% month-to-month.

Thailand Aluminum Imports by Type

Aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) (26K tons) and unwrought aluminium alloys (25K tons) were the main products of aluminum imports to Thailand.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in unwrought aluminium alloys (with a CAGR of +1.1%).

In value terms, aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) ($65M) and unwrought aluminium alloys ($64M) appeared to be the most imported types of aluminum in Thailand.

Thailand Aluminum Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (8.5K tons), Australia (7.9K tons) and India (6.8K tons) were the main suppliers of aluminum imports to Thailand, together comprising 46% of total imports. Russia, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in Russia (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($22M), Australia ($20M) and India ($16M) were the largest aluminum suppliers to Thailand, together accounting for 45% of total imports. Malaysia, Russia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 49%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Russia, with a CAGR of +5.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
