Areca Nut Price in Thailand Plummets to $1,114 per Ton After Four Consecutive Months of Contraction

Thailand Areca Nut Export Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the areca nut price stood at $1,114 per ton (FOB, Thailand), waning by -10.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 an increase of 125% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,794 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to April 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($1,332 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($507 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (-1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Thailand Areca Nut Exports

In April 2023, approximately 2.9K tons of areca nuts were exported from Thailand; increasing by 4.2% on the previous month's figure. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when exports increased by 313% against the previous month.

In value terms, areca nut exports shrank to $3.2M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 with an increase of 317% against the previous month.

Thailand Areca Nut Exports by Country

Bangladesh (1.7K tons) was the main destination for areca nut exports from Thailand, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, areca nut exports to Bangladesh exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Myanmar (760 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iran (112 tons), with a 3.9% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Bangladesh stood at +11.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Myanmar (-11.3% per month) and Iran (+9.4% per month).

In value terms, the largest markets for areca nut exported from Thailand were Bangladesh ($1.8M), Myanmar ($1M) and India ($99K), with a combined 92% share of total exports. Iran, China, Sri Lanka and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.4%.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +46.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
