Thailand Begins Selection Process for New Central Bank Governor

Thailand is poised to announce a panel next month that will be tasked with selecting a new central bank governor to succeed Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput. According to Bloomberg, Sethaput's term will conclude in September, making it imperative for the selection process to begin promptly. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira emphasized the need for the next governor to be "forward-looking with modern ideas," highlighting the importance of collaboration with the finance ministry and government.

The selection panel is expected to be formed in March, allowing ample time to undertake a "meticulous" selection process. As stipulated by law, the panel is obligated to present a list of candidates to the finance minister at least 90 days before the end of Sethaput's term. Leading contenders include Sutapa Amornvivat, a former International Monetary Fund economist, and BOT Deputy Governor Roong Mallikamas.

The upcoming appointment is of particular relevance following the government's unsuccessful attempt to name a former minister as the BOT chair, a move seen as an effort to consolidate control over the monetary authority. The Finance Ministry has put forward Somchai Sujjapongse, a former permanent secretary, as its nominee for the BOT chairmanship, although this position does not influence monetary policy decisions.

Anticipation surrounds whether the new governor will work towards easing tensions with the government, which has consistently advocated for rate reductions and weakened currency. The BOT's upcoming policy rate review on February 26 will be keenly observed, especially given recent economic forecasts from the IndexBox platform indicating a potential rise in inflationary pressures in the region.
