Thailand Crude Oil Imports
In 2023, approx. 58M tons of crude petroleum oil were imported into Thailand; increasing by 9.1% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 619% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, crude oil imports fell to $32.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $38.9B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
In 2023, the United Arab Emirates (25M tons) constituted the largest supplier of crude oil to Thailand, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, crude oil imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Saudi Arabia (8.5M tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (6.7M tons), with a 12% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+0.9% per year) and the United States (+66.4% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($14B) constituted the largest supplier of crude petroleum oil to Thailand, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($4.7B), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 12% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-3.3% per year) and the United States (+60.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the crude oil price stood at $564 per ton (CIF, Thailand), with a decrease of -17.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 447%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $4,533 per ton. From 2019 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Libya ($601 per ton) and Malaysia ($590 per ton), while the price for Australia ($534 per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($554 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
