Thailand's Fiberboard Price Rises Slightly to $51.6 per Cubic Meter

Thailand Fiberboard Export Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the fiberboard price stood at $51.6 per cubic meter (FOB, Thailand), rising by 2% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average export price increased by 5.3% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $61.7 per cubic meter in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to April 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In April 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Vietnam ($60.1 per cubic meter) and Kuwait ($56.0 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($43.4 per cubic meter) and Iraq ($44.7 per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Thailand Fiberboard Exports

In April 2023, exports of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials from Thailand dropped to 1.4M cubic meters, shrinking by -7.5% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a mild expansion from April 2022 to April 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +14.8% against February 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 when exports increased by 46% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 1.6M cubic meters in March 2023, and then shrank in the following month.

In value terms, fiberboard exports declined to $74M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when exports increased by 34% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $85M. From July 2022 to April 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Thailand Fiberboard Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (386K cubic meters), the United Arab Emirates (253K cubic meters) and Egypt (211K cubic meters) were the main destinations of fiberboard exports from Thailand, together accounting for 59% of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Israel, Kuwait, South Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, India, Iraq and Syrian Arab Republic, which together accounted for a further 32%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +65.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for fiberboard exported from Thailand were Saudi Arabia ($18M), the United Arab Emirates ($13M) and Egypt ($10M), with a combined 56% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Kuwait, Israel, South Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, India, Syrian Arab Republic and Iraq, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +47.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
