Thailand Fruit and Berry Exports

In 2023, fruit and berry exports from Thailand expanded markedly to 2M tons, surging by 6.7% on 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports decreased by -5.9% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 2.1M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fruit and berry exports surged to $5.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

China (1.6M tons) was the main destination for fruit and berry exports from Thailand, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, fruit and berry exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (167K tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (63K tons), with a 3.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to +11.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+27.9% per year) and Vietnam (-11.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($4.9B) remains the key foreign market for fruits and berries exports from Thailand, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($108M), with a 2% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong, with a 1.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to China stood at +30.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+33.6% per year) and Hong Kong (-6.4% per year).

Exports by Type

Fruits and berries, nes (1.5M tons) was the largest type of fruits and berries exported from Thailand, accounting for a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, fruits and berries, nes exceeded the volume of the second product type, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas (377K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by pineapples (38K tons), with a 1.9% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of fruits and berries, nes exports stood at +5.8%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: mangoes, mangosteens and guavas (+4.4% per year) and pineapples (+34.6% per year).

In value terms, fruits and berries, nes ($4.7B) remains the largest type of fruits and berries exported from Thailand, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by mangoes, mangosteens and guavas ($638M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by grapefruits, with a 0.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of fruits and berries, nes exports stood at +23.0%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: mangoes, mangosteens and guavas (+13.5% per year) and grapefruits (+16.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the fruit and berry price stood at $2,753 per ton (FOB, Thailand), rising by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($3,131 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($573 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+16.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
