Thailand Sees $6.8M Increase in Glass Bottle and Jar Exports in September 2023

Thailand Glass Container Exports

In September 2023, overseas shipments of bottles, jars and other containers of glass increased by 22% to 71M units, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 when exports increased by 36% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 102M units in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports rose remarkably to $6.8M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 37% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $9M. Exports by Country

Myanmar (12M units), Cambodia (12M units) and the United States (9.9M units) were the main destinations of glass bottle, jar and container exports from Thailand, together accounting for 48% of total exports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the biggest increases were in Cambodia (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for glass bottle, jar and container exported from Thailand were the United States ($1.1M), Cambodia ($1M) and Myanmar ($969K), with a combined 45% share of total exports.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +5.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In September 2023, the glass container price amounted to $96.6 per thousand units (FOB, Thailand), with a decrease of -5.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 13% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $107 per thousand units in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($124 per thousand units), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($74.0 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
