Thailand Lactose Imports
In November 2023, supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup was finally on the rise to reach 3.2K tons for the first time since August 2023, thus ending a two-month declining trend. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from November 2022 to November 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +6.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on November 2023 figures, imports increased by +60.8% against October 2023 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lactose imports soared to $3.5M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 with an increase of 30% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $5.3M. From June 2023 to November 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
In November 2023, the United States (2.5K tons) constituted the largest supplier of lactose to Thailand, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, lactose imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (538 tons), fivefold. Denmark (63 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2% share.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled +11.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+7.5% per month) and Denmark (+2.5% per month).
In value terms, the United States ($2.6M) constituted the largest supplier of lactose to Thailand, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($572K), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 2.8% share.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from the United States amounted to +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+0.7% per month) and Denmark (+5.6% per month).
Import Prices by Country
In November 2023, the lactose price amounted to $1,101 per ton (CIF, Thailand), waning by -22.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 17% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $2,105 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to November 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,163 per ton), while the price for Germany ($1,063 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
