Thailand Motor Vehicle Engine Exports
After five years of growth, overseas shipments of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) decreased by -45.3% to 410K units in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 750K units in 2022, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports dropped markedly to $309M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $615M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
Cambodia (214K units) was the main destination for motor vehicle engine exports from Thailand, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, motor vehicle engine exports to Cambodia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (72K units), threefold. Malaysia (35K units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cambodia totaled +17.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.2% per year) and Malaysia (-7.9% per year).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($94M), Vietnam ($58M) and Malaysia ($49M) were the largest markets for motor vehicle engine exported from Thailand worldwide, together accounting for 65% of total exports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc (234K units), engines (162K units) and engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc (14K units) were the main products of motor vehicle engine exports from Thailand, with a combined 99.9% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc (with a CAGR of +21.5%), while the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, engines ($231M) remains the largest type of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) exported from Thailand, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc ($59M), with a 19% share of total exports. From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of engines exports amounted to -7.8%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc (-2.3% per year) and engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc (+16.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the motor vehicle engine price stood at $754 per unit (FOB, Thailand), with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The export price peaked at $2.1 thousand per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($2.7 thousand per unit), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($229 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+24.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
