Thailand Salt Exports
In 2023, the amount of salt and pure sodium chloride exported from Thailand expanded slightly to 284K tons, with an increase of 1.6% compared with 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, salt exports contracted slightly to $30M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $32M, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country
Cambodia (100K tons), Vietnam (56K tons) and Myanmar (34K tons) were the main destinations of salt exports from Thailand, with a combined 67% share of total exports. Malaysia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +41.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cambodia ($8.7M), Vietnam ($4.8M) and Myanmar ($3.4M) were the largest markets for salt exported from Thailand worldwide, together accounting for 56% of total exports. Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Philippines and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +34.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the salt price amounted to $106 per ton (FOB, Thailand), dropping by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 54%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $196 per ton. From 2020 to 2023, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($193 per ton), while the average price for exports to Marshall Islands ($81 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
