Thailand Saturated Acyclic Monocarboxylic Acids Imports
In 2023, purchases abroad of saturated acyclic monocarboxylic acids decreased by -12.7% to 345K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -34.4% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 64%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 525K tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, saturated acyclic monocarboxylic acids imports contracted rapidly to $319M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $479M. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Singapore (129K tons), China (104K tons) and Malaysia (64K tons) were the main suppliers of saturated acyclic monocarboxylic acids imports to Thailand, together accounting for 86% of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest saturated acyclic monocarboxylic acids suppliers to Thailand were China ($100M), Singapore ($93M) and Malaysia ($48M), together accounting for 76% of total imports.

Lauric acid and other acids, their salts and esters, mono-, di- or tri-chloroacetic acids; propionic, butanoic and pentanoic acids and their salts and esters, palmitic acid, stearic acid, their salts and esters, formic acid, its salts and esters, acetic anhydride and salts of acetic acid lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for palmitic acid, stearic acid, their salts and esters (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, saturated acyclic monocarboxylic acids with the largest imports in Thailand were esters of acetic acid (excluding ethyl acetate) ($101M), ethyl acetate ($59M) and acetic acid ($58M), with a combined 68% share of total imports. Lauric acid and other acids, their salts and esters, mono-, di- or tri-chloroacetic acids; propionic, butanoic and pentanoic acids and their salts and esters, palmitic acid, stearic acid, their salts and esters, formic acid, its salts and esters, salts of acetic acid and acetic anhydride lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the saturated acyclic monocarboxylic acids price amounted to $924 per ton (CIF, Thailand), with a decrease of -19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,141 per ton in 2022, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,032 per ton), while the price for Singapore ($718 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
