Thailand Stimulates Economy with $890 Million Handout to Senior Citizens

Thailand has taken a bold step to stimulate its sluggish economy by transferring approximately 30 billion baht ($890 million) to its senior citizens. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to tackle the high cost of living and invigorate the country's economic growth. Other strategies include debt moratoriums and increased state spending to achieve targeted growth of about 3% for the year. Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul suggests the latest cash disbursement could add 0.1 percentage point to the nation's GDP.

The initial phase of this program saw funds extended to over 14 million welfare cardholders and individuals with disabilities. Plans are underway to expand the digital payment system for remaining eligible beneficiaries, with readiness expected by the second quarter. As more than 30 million people registered for last year's handout, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira expressed optimism that growth would exceed the anticipated 3% due to these stimulus measures and an influx of foreign investments later in the year.

To maintain the momentum of economic growth, the government is considering additional allocations if the 160 billion baht budgeted for this year proves insufficient. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat emphasized the government's commitment to sustaining economic momentum through varying seasons, ensuring a stable path towards recovery.
