Thailand's Economic Growth to Underperform in 2025

Thailand's economic growth is projected to fall short of expectations in 2025, with the Central Bank's forecast now dipping below the previously anticipated 2.9% growth rate due to a weaker-than-expected fourth quarter. According to a report by Reuters, the decline in consumer spending occurred despite a government cash handout program designed to stimulate growth.

Bank of Thailand Governor, Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, revealed in an interview that the economy might only grow around 2.7% into 2024, with the fourth-quarter performance falling short of projections. The $14 billion government handout did not have the desired effect on boosting consumption, as many beneficiaries used the funds to settle debts rather than spend. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of fiscal stimulus policies on economic growth.

The administration plans to introduce a third phase of the 'digital wallet' program in April 2025, aimed at reviving economic momentum with an ambition to achieve 'very high' growth in the first quarter. This initiative, pivotal to the ruling party's election strategy, began in September 2024 but experienced setbacks.

Monetary policy remains ostensibly neutral with inflation anticipated to rise to 1.1%, staying within the 1-3% target band. However, the Bank of Thailand is wary of the baht's volatility, maintaining a cautious approach with its interest rate policy, as evidenced by its decision to keep rates steady at 2.25% following a surprise cut last October.

Further complicating the economic landscape is the uncertainty posed by the geopolitical shifts accompanying U.S. President Donald Trump's return to office. The potential reordering of supply chains provides both opportunities and challenges for Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank expresses hesitance towards embracing cryptocurrencies as an alternative payment system due to scalability and value stability concerns, opting instead to rely on established platforms like Promptpay.
