The Impact of Rupee Volatility on Indian Corporates
After enjoying a period of stability, the Indian rupee is now on a downward trend, challenging corporate earnings across the country. According to a report from Bloomberg, several Indian companies are facing increased foreign-exchange losses due to recent currency fluctuations.
InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., India's largest airline, reported a threefold increase in foreign-exchange losses, reaching 14.6 billion rupees ($169 million) in the December quarter. Similarly, the country's leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. acknowledged that currency variations have negatively impacted their margins. As the earnings season progresses, more companies, especially smaller ones, have begun announcing currency-related losses.
The rupee has depreciated by 2.4% against the dollar in the last two months, marking the steepest decline among emerging Asian currencies. This downturn has led to speculation that the Reserve Bank of India might have relaxed its stringent control over the currency. Although these controls had minimized volatility over the past couple of years, they may have also caused companies to become complacent about managing foreign-exchange risks.
With the slowing of economic growth and a rise in global volatility, Indian companies are now focusing on hedging their exposures against further rupee declines. Neeraj Gambhir, group executive at Axis Bank Ltd., noted a surge in inquiries about hedging as companies respond to the increasing currency volatility.
In December alone, Indian companies secured $48 billion worth of forward cover, the highest figure anticipated for 2024, as indicated by the Clearing Corp. of India. This demand increased hedging costs by more than a percentage point last month. Even smaller companies like NIIT Learning Systems Ltd. and Tanla Platforms Ltd. have reported forex losses of 14 million rupees and 44 million rupees, respectively, in the December quarter.
InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s CFO Gaurav Negi indicated that the company is evaluating the possibility of extending its hedging beyond the current 12 months. Currently, the company hedges up to 70% of its exposure for one year.
Despite these challenges, India's low foreign debt-to-GDP ratio remains a buffer against the fast-evolving currency market. As of the third quarter of 2024, the ratio stood at $411.8 billion, or 11.1% of GDP, as per data from Nomura Holdings Inc.
Economists at Nomura, led by Sonal Varma, noted that while unhedged exposures may experience mark-to-market losses, and rolling over could be complex if global financial conditions tighten, the overall systemic risks seem limited. Nonetheless, the current rupee losses have sparked discussions about the necessity of allowing the currency to float more freely.
Duvvuri Subbarao, a former governor of the central bank during the global financial crisis, warned that over-intervention by the RBI could lead companies to depend excessively on the central bank for risk management.
