TotalEnergies to Boost U.S. LNG Investments as Market Grows

TotalEnergies is set to enhance its investments in the U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector over the next decade, reinforcing its ambition to become a leading exporter of U.S. LNG. According to a report by Reuters, CEO Patrick Pouyanne aims to capitalize on America's vast shale reserves despite concerns from U.S. market analysts about the potential impact on domestic gas prices.

In addressing concerns about potential price hikes, Pouyanne emphasized the importance of developing infrastructure over resource scarcity, stating, "If you look at the history of the evolution of the U.S. gas price, the spikes are more linked to the lack of infrastructure than the lack of resources." TotalEnergies plans strategic expansions at its Cameron and Rio Grande LNG facilities, potentially adding several more production trains.

The U.S. has significantly increased its LNG export capacity, more than doubling its export value from $29 billion in 2024 to $33.4 billion in 2023 as reported by the IndexBox platform. Major export destinations include the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom, with values reaching $4.4 billion, $3.8 billion, and $3.5 billion respectively in 2023. Meanwhile, the United States imported $909.9 million worth of LNG in 2024, with Trinidad and Tobago and Nigeria as the top suppliers.

European dependence on U.S. LNG has elevated since geopolitical tensions with Russia escalated, with TotalEnergies playing a crucial role as a supplier. However, the company continues to navigate intricate geopolitics, balancing supply sources between regions like the U.S., Russia, Qatar, and Australia.

Pouyanne further advised European leaders to engage in negotiations with the U.S. to secure LNG supplies, stressing the inadequacy of a rushed ban on Russian LNG before 2027, as the global market is not yet equipped to offset such a substantial supply reroute.
