Toyota Expands EV Production with New Facilities in China and the U.S.

Toyota Motor Corp. is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market by establishing a new production facility in Shanghai and a battery production plant in North Carolina. According to recent reports, the Japanese automaker announced these developments as part of its strategy to expand its footprint in the rapidly growing sector.

The Shanghai-based venture, set to begin production by 2027, highlights Toyota's commitment to penetrating the Chinese EV market, which is projected to have an export value of $89.4 billion by 2024, compared to $77.7 billion in 2023. Despite this increase in exports, China's import value for passenger cars is anticipated to decrease from $45.9 billion in 2023 to $38.4 billion in 2024, reflecting a strong domestic production growth.

With an initial capacity of 100,000 vehicles per year at the new site in Jinshan district, Toyota aims to create approximately 1,000 jobs, bolstering its operations within the country. These efforts align with the company's objective to support China's aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Meanwhile, the $14 billion North Carolina battery facility, expected to generate 5,000 jobs, will serve the North American market, with shipments commencing in April 2025. These initiatives position Toyota to better compete with established EV manufacturers like Tesla and BYD.

Beyond production efforts, Toyota reported a 61% surge in its fiscal third-quarter profits to 2.19 trillion yen ($14 billion) compared to the previous year, bolstered by higher sales and favorable exchange rates. The company has revised its full fiscal year profit forecast to 4.5 trillion yen ($29 billion), aiming to recover from challenges stemming from earlier certification issues in Japan.
