Toyota to Establish EV Production Unit in Shanghai by 2027

In a strategic move, Toyota Motor announced its plans to set up a wholly owned company in Shanghai, China, dedicated to developing and producing electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries specifically for the Lexus brand. According to the report, production is expected to commence in 2027, with an initial capacity of approximately 100,000 units annually, contributing around 1,000 new jobs during the start-up phase.

China's passenger car market, one of the largest globally, provides a promising backdrop for this venture. According to data from the IndexBox platform, China's export value for passenger cars in 2023 amounted to USD 77.7 billion, which is expected to rise to USD 89.4 billion in 2024.
