Toyota's Global Production Decline for Ninth Month: October Insights

Toyota Motor's global production experienced its ninth consecutive month of decline in October, although the decrease was milder compared to previous months. The detailed report by Reuters can be accessed here. While production dipped, Toyota celebrated a significant uptick in sales, marking a 1.4% increase to reach 903,103 vehicles globally, a record figure for October.

In terms of production specifics, Toyota reported a global output of 893,164 vehicles, which is a slight reduction of 0.8%. Despite the drop, this is an improvement from the 8% decline observed in September. The production drop in the United States was pronounced at 13%, primarily due to a four-month halt in manufacturing of SUV models Grand Highlander and Lexus TX caused by an airbag issue. Production resumed on October 21, and normal outputs are anticipated by January at Toyota's Indiana plant.

In China, facing tough competition from local brands, production fell by 9%. Further afield, Toyota's production decreased by 13% in Thailand due to soft market demand. However, it is noteworthy that domestic production in Japan grew by 8% as it rebounded from last year's slump, which was caused by an accident at a supplier's facility that temporarily affected multiple plants.

Interestingly, production in Canada and Mexico showed growth, with both countries recording a 2% increase in vehicle output. The production and sales statistics take into account outputs from Toyota's luxury Lexus brand while excluding figures from the group companies Hino and Daihatsu.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, Japan's export value of passenger cars reached USD 110.7 billion in 2023. The United States was the leading destination, with exports valued at USD 41.3 billion, followed by Australia at USD 8.2 billion, China at USD 6.7 billion, Canada at USD 5.3 billion, and the United Kingdom at USD 3.7 billion.
