TSMC in Talks with Nvidia to Produce AI Chips in Arizona

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is reportedly in negotiations with Nvidia Corp to manufacture its Blackwell artificial intelligence chips at the chipmaker's new facility in Arizona, according to sources familiar with the matter. The Arizona plant is expected to begin volume production early next year, aligning with TSMC's plans to expand its manufacturing operations beyond Taiwan.

So far, Nvidia's Blackwell chips have been produced at TSMC's Taiwan facilities, with high demand reported among sectors like generative AI and accelerated computing. This potential agreement would not only add another customer to TSMC's operations in Arizona but also reinforce the U.S. government's efforts to revive domestic semiconductor manufacturing by supporting the development of TSMC's Phoenix-based facilities.

According to the IndexBox platform, Taiwan remains the leading exporter in the world electronic chip market, with an export value reaching $317.5 billion in 2023. While TSMC contemplates producing the front-end process of Nvidia's chips in Arizona, factors like the necessary chip on wafer on substrate (CoWoS) capacity will still require components to be returned to Taiwan for final packaging.

Nvidia's strategic partnership with TSMC reflects the broader dynamics in the global semiconductor industry, where Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR, and China dominate the top three positions in chip export values. Meanwhile, China continues to lead in chip importation, with a whopping $349.3 billion in 2023, a testament to its significant role and demand in the semiconductor supply chain.
