Turkey Bleached Sulphate Pulp Imports
For the third year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in purchases abroad of bleached sulphate pulp, which increased by 7.1% to 1.7M tons in 2024. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2014 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports increased by +36.5% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2024 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports expanded markedly to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.4B. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
In 2024, Brazil (472K tons) constituted the largest supplier of bleached sulphate pulp to Turkey, accounting for a 28% share of total imports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (225K tons), twofold. Uruguay (225K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil amounted to +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+0.9% per year) and Uruguay (+22.6% per year).
In value terms, the largest bleached sulphate pulp suppliers to Turkey were Brazil ($362M), the United States ($244M) and Finland ($166M), together accounting for 62% of total imports. Uruguay, Portugal, Sweden and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +31.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
Wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood (1M tons) and wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of coniferous wood (653K tons) were the main products of bleached sulphate pulp imports to Turkey.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood (with a CAGR of +6.6%).
In value terms, wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood ($658M) and wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of coniferous wood ($582M) appeared to be the most imported types of bleached sulphate pulp in Turkey.
Import Prices by Country
In 2024, the bleached sulphate pulp price amounted to $748 per ton (CIF, Turkey), surging by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight expansion from 2014 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, bleached sulphate pulp import price decreased by -19.8% against 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 41%. The import price peaked at $933 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,081 per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($437 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
