Turkey Bolsters LNG Imports Amidst Pipeline Supply Challenges

Turkey is increasingly turning to liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to meet its energy needs as regional pipeline supplies face disruptions, according to a recent report from Bloomberg. The nation's state-run gas importer, Botas, recently acquired seven LNG shipments, enhancing its strategy to counter diminished pipeline flows from Azerbaijan.

This shift toward LNG comes following technical issues at Azerbaijan's BP Plc-led Shah Deniz project, which have significantly curtailed piped gas flows. Consequently, Turkey's increased reliance on LNG adds strain to its energy supply chain during a period of heightened winter demand. The nation is also managing inconsistent natural gas deliveries from Iran and remains vigilant due to geopolitical tensions impacting the TurkStream pipeline's operation.

In 2024, Turkey's expenditure on LNG imports reached $3.7 billion, highlighting a substantial increase from $2.2 billion in 2023, as per data from the IndexBox platform. This reflects the country's pivot towards alternative gas sources amid declining regional supplies. The top LNG suppliers to Turkey in 2023 comprised Iran ($1.7 billion), Qatar ($927.2 million), and the United States ($769.1 million).

Despite the drop in piped supplies, Azerbaijan continued to deliver gas to Turkey via the Bravo platform, allowing some consistency in supply. As Turkey navigates these complex energy dynamics, its LNG import strategy underscores the nation's adaptability and responsiveness to shifting geopolitical and environmental factors.

Although Turkey's energy exports in 2023 were relatively modest, amounting to $109.5 million, the bolstering of LNG imports underscores a strategic pivot vital for sustaining energy security through unpredictable winter months.
